Abstract

Due to the effective role of earth dams in providing water needs and the potential hazards for their downstream communities, the issues of the safety of dams are in the making and also during the exploitation period is of particular importance. In this study, the effect of horizontal drainage on the reduction of the effects of leakage from a cross section of a homogeneous earth dam has been studied and compared. In addition, the leakage from the body and the maximum output gradient at the dam was calculated using the Seep / W software based on finite element method. The results of this study showed that the increase in the length of the horizontal drain is proportional to the discharge leakage from the dam and the photo ratio is under pressure. Also, with an increase in the length of the horizontal drain, the hydraulic gradient is slightly increased, but its increase in the outlet is not affected by the gravity, and therefore it will not be dangerous.
