A review of various types of filters in terms of resistance to evasion of materials in coastal structures and their comparison

Abstract

Filters are used in many marine and hydraulic structures to prevent evacuation and drainage. The filters are generally divided into three categories of closed geometry, stable open geometry, unsteady open geometry, in terms of resistance to escape of bed materials. In geometric filters, hydrodynamic loading does not occur, but volatile geometry filters allow materials to escape. In unstable open geometry filters, some volatile evaporation that prevents serious damage to the structure is acceptable. In order to operate open-source filters, extensive laboratory studies have been carried out to date, but there is still a brief knowledge available in this area. For this reason, the researchers in the field of hydraulic engineering do not use this design method in coastal structures. So, in coastal structures, filters are implemented and designed in the form of closed geometry. Due to the high importance of the filter layer in coastal structures, this paper examines the history of studies on the classification of different types of filters in terms of resistance to the escape of bed materials and their comparison.
